Ecosystems of the World

An infographic based around the Ecosystems of the world.  Created for onlineschooling.org to be used as a learning aid for children, tried to present an overview of the ecosystems.  On creating this infographic I discovered that Ecosystems are so complex with many different factors influencing them that it was difficult to present this in one infographic.  This was the challenge in creating this graphic, which information to use to give an insight into the ecosystem while making it accessible for the audience.

I wanted to show an visually interesting graphic, mixing and breaking away from the vector imagery favoured in infographics at the moment.  Using a pie chart as the base and mixing it with maps and photos of the different animals from that ecosystem, tried to create depth with the images and pull outs of info with the colours and shapes.  With the amount of text on the graphic is was a major challenge.  Hopefully it works, let me know your thoughts.  Your thoughts are always welcome.

Below is a series of images showing the process of creating the infographic.  There are a total of 16 images used in this graphic, along with all the text.

Version 1.

Mapping out the shapes and colours of the main focus of the graphic.

Version 2.

Working out from the centre and building up the panels for each ecosystem.  Adding image in the panels to try and add depth to build info over the top of it.

The Size of the Universe

How big is the Universe?  That’s a question I have tried to answer with this infographic poster for onlineschooling.org Aimed at kids it needed to show at a glance just how big the universe really is, while getting their attention and pulling them in to view the information.  To accomplish this decided to show our solar system, then show the different distances from the earth to selected stars, cluster systems using a clear line.  Hopefully the eye flows with the line to the other systems.  These are not to scale unfortunately, this is because of the vast distances involved, the imagery would not fit onto a poster size.  At the bottom of the poster in red you will see the distances to scale.  In which our solar system is so small, can’t really see it.

Overal wanted the poster to reflect space, with the use of black and spaces left blank.  While having just enough imagery for a kid to look at and remember without being overwhelmed.  Breaking the information down (because these are some very very big numbers) showing just how big the universe is.  Also remembering the most important thing to kids – making it look cool.

Let me know if I have accomplished what I was trying to do.

Mars Mission

Created in celebration of Obama’s ‘Space’ speech – that we should aim to go to Mars by 2030, which seem to have echos of Kennedy’s Moon speech, decided to compare the two dreams. The moon missions is well documented, so finding imagery and information related to it was not overly difficult.  However, the technology and how we are going to go to the Mars to yet to be designed.  Therefore, this graphic aims to show the possible technology along side a timeline and past missions to the Moon and Mars.  Overall I like the graphic, I hope it presents a informed look at the difficult space dreams of two visionary men.

Ironman 2

Having watched Iron Man 2 (enjoyed it – great fun!) decided to create a short review of the film as a line graph.  Looking at the storyline vs the excitement level, this is my personal take and am sure their are lots of different views.  Might start creating more of these for films I watch, as its a quick and fun little exercise.

How we pay for things

Inspired by the Guardian’s UK public spending by government department and Wallstat’s Death and Taxes poster have created this.  It shows UK total monetary transactions and the amount of those transactions in cash against the value of the two.  So for example cash transactions in pubs/club/bars were 89% of all transactions but only accounted for 41% of the total value related to total value recorded.  The visualization uses data from the report published by Payments Council of the UK entitled “The Way We Pay”, which shows the decline in the use of cash over the past decade.  The data is a lot and requires you to sit with it for a while and work thought it, but if you view the original report there is a lot of data, which strangely I enjoyed working through and coming up with the graphic.  Let me know what you think.

Salt Mountains

Do you know the amount of Salt in processed food?

We all hear about the calories and fat content, but salt seems to be the hidden health risk – it can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease.  This infographic was created to show those levels.  Based around the idea of salt piles, wanted to show the relationships of salt content between the different kinds of processed food.  For me the surprise was the amount of salt within soup, never realized before.  Although triangles are not the best way to compare data, it is used to in-force the idea of there being mountains.  Think overall the graphic illustrates the message of there being to much salt content in food.

BMW Group DesignWorks USA

BMW Group Designworks – The world’s most innovative design company, as voted by FAST COMPANY, working with the likes of Starbucks and HP, this design-consulting has applied its design thinking to everything from coffeemakers to Nokia phones.  Created for MeetTheBoss TV this infographic examines the Approach, Process and the end Products of BMW Group Designworks.  As the Approach informs all design it is placed at the center, flowing out to the Products which is a mixture of the Approach and Process.

Have included some stills of my process and approach to creating the final design, showing how the design evolved.  For the full view of the design, please click on the image.

These are the initial sketches for the design.  I had an idea of what I wanted to do from researching the company and their products, so these are sketches to plan out those ideas and provide a bit of a visual of what I want to achieve.

Moving onto Ai, this is the start of the design – mapping out size (mainly for the text size), placing the different aspects for the Approach, Process and adding the Products.  Building up the relationships between each element, and investigate how the eye flows over the image to help decide where to place the products.

By adding the imagery, get get a sense of texture and tone of the final design.  Also helps to see the colour relationships, how the different colours of each image link together or don’t.

Continuing on with working out the color relationships.  Investigating the color of the circle elements (color before simply to provide visual contrast), from this decided that the high contrast solid colors were to strong and hurt the eye, therefore decided to soften them and add texture – which would also add some depth.

Still 4

Have worked out the colors and added texture, along with the product information and the awards that product won.  Would have loved to left the design as this, but without the product info.  Liked the how simply it is with the background texture and how you have to look at it.  However, it needed the product info and other bits (on the final one below for people not knowing who BMW Group Designworks are), but still very happy with the final one.  Feels it gives a good overview of who, how and what BMW Group Designworks do.

An Android World

First things first.  I had some much fun playing and creating these figures based on the Android robot!  Favorite being Mr T.  Discovered that it doesn’t work for anyone, because person needs to have at least one aspect to them that you can easily be associated with them.  Saying that, it was fun to see who worked and who didn’t.  Not much process here other than playing with the character elements and seeing what works, the only real process was once created figure, removing stuff to make it work with as little number of elements as possible.

Let me know what is your favorite, or maybe you have a request for a figure of someone – email, tweet me anyway welcome.

Created with the help of Ciaran Duffy.

BuySellAds.com – celebrating 2 years

A new infographic posted today for BuySellAds.com – a platform for buying and selling ad for publishers and advertisers (as the name says).  Worked with BSA in developing the infographic to showcase their growth over the last two years and some of the impressive numbers involved – 670.55 GB of data transferred per day, and so on.  Am happy with the end result and enjoyed the process of working with the company.  Hope it portrays what a great site BSA is and what a great job they are doing.
